Common Ground

The term heartland refers to Singapore’s residential neighborhoods, which serve as vital hubs for civic activity and community interaction. These areas feature shared spaces and facilities designed to meet the evolving needs of residents. As these needs shift, so too do the structures that support them.

Common Ground is a recent initiative in Bedok’s heartland, repurposing a three-decade-old, three-story building that once housed a public library. Today, it brings together various social enterprises under one roof. To reflect this new socio-civic role, the architects transformed the original internal stairwell into a striking atrium that enhances the entrance experience and connects the building with nearby town center amenities.

A sectional model of the redesigned building illustrates this transformation, accompanied by details about its key tenants—social enterprises dedicated to community engagement and positive impact. The space is designed to facilitate their activities and foster collaboration between different groups.

Led by Red Bean Architects, the project was supported by Unipac Consulting Engineers and D’Associates. Red Bean Architects, a Singapore-based creative studio, envisions a dynamic future while honoring traditional craftsmanship. Their designs emphasize sustainability, functionality, and the empowerment of the people who use them.
